The North American Montessori Teachers’ Association estimates that there about 4,500 Montessori schools in the United States and about 20,000 worldwide. Following the philosophy and teaching of Doctor Maria Montessori, all of our classrooms are equipped with her manipulative materials.
All learning passes from concrete to abstract and from simple to complex. Southwest Montessori Christian Academy makes use of her observation that children love concentration, order, work, creativity, accomplishment, and silence.
The teacher’s role is unobtrusive — the child actively participates in learning. He works at his own pace and receives individualized instruction as needed. The environment and method encourage internal self-discipline.
Instruction is adapted to the student’s learning style. Mixed-age grouping provides examples to the younger and leadership experience to the older children. The child chooses his own work according to his interests and abilities.
He spots his own errors through feedback from the material. He works as long as he wants to on a chosen project. Learning is reinforced through repetition and feelings of success.
Manipulation of concrete objects provides a foundation for later understanding of abstract concepts. The child can move around and work where he is comfortable. He is taught to respect his environment by helping keep the classroom clean and orderly at our academy.
